The US Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station was established in 1956 and has been permanently staffed since this time.
The first major construction here was the original silver dome which was started in 1971. With a diameter of 50 metres and height of 15 metres, for many years this contained underground accommodation, laboratories and recreational facilities for all the staff.
With time, this structure was seen as cold, uncomfortable and increasingly unsafe. Hence began the building of the new elevated station, which covers 6129 square metres and is build above ground level on stilts. Stainless steel, pressurised walls insulate the accommodation, libraries, research laboratories, laundry, shop, post office, hospital, music rooms and bar, which is home to up to 240 people. The facility also includes a state of the art greenhouse.
