The Flinders and Gammon Range stretch in to the South Australian desert, north of Adelaide and Port Augusta. This semi-arid Flinders Ranges includes the magnificent Wilpena Pound with St Mary’s Peak being the highest in South Australia. The Gammon Ranges are the remote northern extension of the Flinders, with few walking tracks and true desert wilderness. The high ridges, rocky peaks and mysterious gorges of the Flinders and gammon Ranges offer some of Australia’s finest walking country. The best time of year to walk is the cool, dry winters from April to October.

Aiming to create comprehensive trekking holiday, we have selected some of the best sections of the Heysen Trail in the Flinders Ranges and combined it with the walks in the more remote and spectacular Gammon Ranges. You will enjoy walking with just a daypack while our comfortable camps are set-up with 4WD vehicle support. You will be walking up to seven hours per day. This may include long climbs walking up steep hills and exploring rugged canyons most of the day. The detailed itinerary indicates the walking distances for each day. Some days are easier than others. We move from gorges to ridgelines, and as such there is a reasonable degree of uphill and downhill climbing and the rocky ground can be rugged at times.

A traverse of Wilpena Pound and St Mary’s Peak (1171m) combined with gorges rich in Aboriginal art ensure this trip balances challenge and discovery with relaxation in the outback.
