This exciting 4-day break takes us up to Finland's snowy north, where we will cross frozen lakes and weave through coniferous forests on sleds pulled by Siberian huskies. The best time of year to travel to this region is in February, March and April when the snow conditions are at their best and the days are getting longer. If you fancy doing something completely different this weekend, then this is the trip for you. No previous experience is required and our expert guides will teach us all we need to know to mush, mush!
Huskies & Mushing Our first night is spent in a comfortable lodge a short distance from the airport. After settling in to our cosy cabins and having dinner together, there will be time to have a few drinks, relax and even to have a sauna if we want. The next morning we will meet the dogs and learn about mushing. It should not take long before the basics are mastered and we will be on our way. We work on the basis of two people sharing a sled and a team of huskies. In our experience this works very well as guiding the sled and dogs is quite energetic and every hour or so it is good to swap over and just enjoy the experience of racing over the crisp, white snow.
Wilderness Safari We aim to cover about 30 to 40 kilometres a day with our dog teams, although the exact routes and lengths will vary according to the local conditions and mother nature. Gliding through the stunning scenery, we should keep our eyes peeled for chance encounters with elk or reindeer that may cross our path on their search for food. We will spend two nights in wilderness log cabins, that are a warm and welcome retreat after the exhilaration of the day's sledding.
