This 'Introduction to Open Canoeing' course is aimed at those with a little or no canoeing experience. During the 4 day course, you will have opportunity to learn the basic necessary skills with the help of instruction and feedback from your coach.
Our aim is to provide the opportunity to sample this wonderful activity and to give you the necessary skills to take it further. The open canoe originated in North America and can be paddled solo, with two people or even as a family group. The traditional canoe is one of the most versatile watercraft being equally at home on the calmest loch or in crashing white water.
This course is ideal for complete beginners or those who have already had a short ‘taste’ of canoeing but who now want some coaching. It is particularly aimed at those who want to join in with one of the canoeing trips on offer. Scotland is a wonderful place to discover and explore by canoe, and this course will get you started and open your eyes to the potential for canoeing in Scotland.
After being met by our guide, you will make your way to nearby Loch Faskally and get started. This loch offers calm and generally sheltered waters - perfect for your first time in a canoe!
We will visit a larger loch, such as Loch Tay, to develop our canoeing skills. On open water, you are more affected by the wind and you will learn how to handle your canoe in these conditions.
Applying the skills you have already learned, we will show you how to put these into practice on rivers and moving water.
Having been introduced to rivers the previous day, we now look to develop these skills, taking on some easy rapids in our open canoes.
