Located in the far southwest of Uganda, only 21 km from the border with Rwanda, lies the old colonial town of Kabale. A functional town, Kabale is situated in a very scenic area of terraced hillsides, rich vegetation and forest. Many travellers pass through this well-laid out and spacious town en route to view the gorillas of Bwindi or Mgahinga, or to rest and relax at nearby Lake Bunyonyi.
Kabale measures 1,827 sq.km and has an altitude ranging from 1,219 to 2,347 m above sea level. This altitude makes it colder than the rest of the country - average monthly temperatures are 15-20 degrees Celsius and can fall to 10 degrees by night. Kabale has a projected population of 629,400 (2000), predominantly from the Bakiga tribe. The density is 344.5 persons/sq.km, the third largest in Uganda. Source: wikipedia
Activities in Kabale
Lake Bunyonyi is located south of Kabale, 13 km away, a straightforward walk (about 3 hrs) or short cycle ride (bikes can be hired in Kabale) for those without private transport. Taxis from Kabale cost around US$7 and take just over 20 minutes.
Relaxing
Many tranquil spots can be found at Lake Bunyonyi. This is a particularly good spot to spend a couple of days after completing a western safari or gorilla trek.
Getting Around
From Kampala to Kabale the road is bitumen and usually takes 6-7 hours (approx. 430 km). Walking or cycling is a great way to explore the local area and town if you are without your own transport.
