Port Sudan can be found half way along the Sudanese Red Sea coast between Ethyp and Eritrea. It is best know as an excellent base for diving in the Red Sea and as a departure point for ferries across the sea to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The ruins of Suakin can also be visited from the city.
Port Sudan is Sudan's most important sea port and was founded by the British in 1909 to link the Red Sea by rail to the River Nile. The railway was used to transport agricultural produce from the rich fertile areas surrounding the Nile to the sea for export.
The population are mainly Arabic with a few Asians and Europeans.
Attractions in Port Sudan
Visit nearby Suakin, the countries oldest port, once used for the slave trade. Ferries to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia depart from Suakin and its souq is worth a visit. Suakin is a 30 minute drive by minibus from Port Sudan.
Activities in Port Sudan
Port Sudan is the main departure point for Scuba Diving trips in Sudan. With the Red Sea near Sudan virtually untouched it makes for a perfect dive site with plentiful shoals of fish, shark and barracuda. The wreck of the Umbria can be found on the Wingate Reef. The vessel was sank in 1940 by its crew to prevent it being captured by the British, and lies at a depth of 36 metres and has become Sudans best wreck dive site.
Getting Around
Buses from other towns in the country operate from the Souq es Shabi 3km from the centre of town. Minibuses and taxis ply the route from the Souq into the city centre. A train operates from Port Sudan to Khartoum via Atbara.
