Located in the far south of Sudan, Juba is the Capital of Equatoria Province. Juba's population has been estimated at around 163,000 - there are also tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees in camps and government run villages on the outskirts of town.
Juba is 1,200 km south of Khartoum. Juba was once a busy port and transport hub connecting Sudan with Kenya, Uganda and the DRC. Since the war most roads and the harbour have been left in a very poor state of repair. The port is no longer in use and the roads are still in the process of being cleared of land mines.
In the 19th century Gondokoro was the Egyptian's southernmost town and was the original capital of Equatoria. The town was used as a staging post for expeditions up the Nile. The cataracts just south of the city mean that travel by river further south is not possible. Gondokoro was abandoned in favour of Juba due to widespread outbreaks of diseases such as Malaria.
During the Second Sudanese Civil War Juba was used as a strategic location and was subject to much fighting. Since the war the United Nations have established a camp near to Juba which serves as a base for both themselves and other charitable agencies in the area.
