El Obeid is the capital city of the Kordofan region of Western Sudan.  El Obeid can be found in the middle of a huge barren dessert, it is an important base for the production of gum which is obtained from acacia trees and used in the manufacture of food agents, ink and medicines.

As the junction between several caravan routes and roads the town is an important transportation hub. El Obeid has a small museum dedicated to Sudanese history, a large Catholic Cathedral and two large sprawling souks.

Attractions in El Obeid

The Sheikan Museum can be found between the football stadium and the cathedral.  It has two main exhibit rooms, the first with pre-historic artefacts from the area and the second with Christian Nubia exhibits.  Many weapons from previous battles can be seen and the museum grounds are surrounded by friezes commemorating the Battle of Sheikan.

The Cathedral is a recent addition to the town, built in 1971, it welcomes visitors and many brightly painted pictures and ceilings can be seen inside.
