Krakow is one of the oldest and largest cities of Poland. The historic centre of Krakow, the former capital of Poland in the Middle Ages, is situated at the foot of the Royal Wawel Castle. The 13th-century merchants' town has Europe's largest market square and numerous historical houses, palaces and churches with magnificent interiors.

Until today it remains one of the most important economic and cultural centres, and a mecca for travellers from around the world. Since the fall of communism the local authorities started renovating all the monuments in order to attract more visitors. The process accelerated even more after joining the EU in 2005.

Krakow is said to be Poland condensed into one city. As its medieval capital, it was the witness of both rise and fall of the Polish empire. The first settlements date back to the 5th century. In the 10th century Cracovia became a part of Poland. In 1039 in became the capital of Poland and lasted until the end of the 16th century when it was moved to Warsaw.

Attractions in Kraków

Apart from the numerous monuments (and medieval square) in the old town, what is definately worth visiting are two districts – Kazimierz and Nowa Huta. The former used to be a separate town for jews which later bacame a part of the city. If you decide to spend more time in Kraków you can take a trip to the nearby Ojców National Park, visit some museums or perhaps relax at Poland’s biggest aqua park.

Activities in Kraków

Bicycles can be hired locally, providing a pleasant alternative to getting around on foot.

Relaxing

The area of Kazimierz, the former jewish district, has recently become the most popular place for nightlife. Situated only 15 minutes from the main square it offers the widest choice of clubs, pubs and restaurants (ranging from restaurants wih klezmer music to salsa clubs).

Getting Around

Krakow’s old town is very condensed. You can get anywhere by foot within 20 minutes. If you plan to visit Nowa Huta, think of taking a tram. Taxis are also widely available.

I've visited Krakow several times over the past 5 years. Although it is now busy with low-cost flight travellers, it is still a magical city at all times of year - particularly if you are lucky enough to be there in winter in the snow! Summer is just wonderful sat in a streetside cafe lapping up the sun. If on a long weekend go for 4 nights, there are many attractions worth a look outside the city.
