The Madre de Dios region of Southern Peru lies close to the Bolivian and Brazilain borders of Peru and is home to three important protected areas – the Tambopata National Reserve, Manu Biosphere Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park.

This lowland region is home to an enormous diversity of wildlife, including jaguar, tapir, caiman, ocelot, giant otter, primates and puma living deep amongst the forest, lakes and water channels which characterise this area. Travellers should never expect to see these big names on a short visit, but with time, patience, the keen eyes of a good local guide and a little bit of luck most will go home having discovered something about the Amazon.

Puerto Maldonado is a short distance from the Tambopata National Park making it a popular start point for travellers wishing to experience the Amazon.
