Spectacular, remote, challenging and jungle-clad with abundant wildlife – these are just some of the descriptions given to the Karnali, Nepal's longest and largest river. With rapids from Grade 3 to 5 the river is suitable for the adventurous or more experienced rafter looking for extreme, expedition-style white-water adventures.
The Karnali region is one of the most remote in the country evidenced by the way in to the put in point follows a 19 hour bus journey and 2-day trek! With quick rises in river levels when snow melts on an unusually hot day rafting can become challenging quickly; the same goes for monsoon rain falls. Rapids range from Grade 3 to 5.
The river builds to its climax in the lower sections after the sharp bend in the river nicknamed 'the elbow' by the Lohore Khola after which multiple big rapids follow each other, the river winding through some magnificent unspoilt scenery, finally flowing through Bardia National Park.
All in all the river flows through some pristine jungle areas and narrow canyons and gorges and for around 180 km there is little sign of human life.
Activities in Karnali River
A rafting trip on the Karnali is usually a 10 round trip, 7 of which are spent rafting. Because of the remote location costs are relatively high when compared to rivers closer to the capital, but in international terms provide amazingly good value for money – few other places in the world can provide similar duration and challenges for the cost of a Karnali trip.
