The Zanzibar North Coast is popular with budget travellers; it has gorgeous beaches and lively nightlife. Most of the tourism is centered around the fishing village of Nungwi with snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities aplenty, however, there’s also the more relaxed village of Kendwa to explore.
Zanzibar was once a separate state with a long trading history within the Arab world but then it united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964.
Attractions in Zanzibar North Coast
In Nungwi it’s possible to see Maasai warriors in their traditional tribal clothing or hit the water to see marine life such as the ever graceful turtles and an abundance of fish.
Another major attraction of Nungwi is its nightlife, there are several restaurants are bars to choose from serving everything from banana curries to pizza and there are also legendary full moon parties to experience.
Activities in Zanzibar North Coast
Being a thriving beach resort, the Zanzibar North Coast has a variety of water sports on offer. In Kendwa you can swim, snorkel and dive off the beautiful yet less crowded beaches, however, it is Nungwi that has the largest choice of water pursuits.
In Nungwi you can swim, dive and snorkel as well but you can also kayak, windsurf and take dhow cruises such as the utterly beautiful sunset cruise. Relaxing and yet exhilarating at the same time.
Relaxing
As in nearly all of Zanzibar the number one way to relax on the island is on its beautiful beaches. Zanzibar’s most popular beach resort is here in Nungwi where you can soak up the sun and watch passing dhows, although it’s more developed than the rest of Zanzibar it still retains its easy going and laidback vibe.
Getting Around
Taxis and dalla-dallas which are small minivans are widely available and serve all the major villages or you can rent a car, moped, motorcycle or bicycle.
