Stone Town is known locally as Mji Mkongwe aka Old Town and it is the cultural and historical centre of Zanzibar. The town consists of narrow alleys, houses, shops, bazaars, and mosques and it’s an eclectic fusion of African, Indian, Arabian and European influences as well as having the contrast of traditional and modern in every aspect of the town from its architecture to its residents.
The town has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Zanzibar was once a separate state with a long trading history within the Arab world but then it united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964.
Attractions in Zanzibar Stone Town
On the waterfront head to the dhow harbour to see the traditional boats, explore the fish market, visit the Palace Museum to see such items as the sultanate's furniture and fittings that survived the Revolution, go to the House of Wonders, which is home to the Zanzibar National Museum of History and Culture or take a short walk to see the Ngome Kongwe aka the Omani Fort.
In Shangani and Vuga visit the Victoria Hall and Gardens, which was once the place of residence for Sultan Barghash's harem or in Central Stone Town take the time to see the mosques and the site of Africa’s last slave market. Finally, in the Creek Road region visit Livingstone House, a former rest place to the explorer David Livingstone.
Activities in Zanzibar Stone Town
Stone Town consists much more of attractions than activities; however, it is well worth taking the time to explore the waterfront region as well as Shangani, Vuga, Creek Road and the narrow winding alleys of Central Stone Town.
With attractions around every corner you’ll never be short of something to do in this fascinating historical town.
Relaxing
Relax in the welcome shade of the Forodhani Gardens along the waterfront or explore the nearby islands in order to make use of their clean and beautiful beaches.
Getting Around
It is possible to get a taxi in Stone Town or to rent a bike, however, the lanes and alleys are very narrow and so it is better and more practical to explore the town on foot.
