Situated in the northern highlands of Tanzania, beneath the twin peaks of Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro, Arusha is the safari capital of the country. Travellers embarking on the popular northern safari circuit all stop in the bustling town to prepare for their journeys into the East African bush.

The dramatic volcanic crater of Mt. Meru stands over the town like a majestic sentinel, its summit strewn with thick clouds, and its slopes dark with verdant forest. Several comfortable lodges are located in lush vegetation on the fringes of the town, providing idyllic spots for relaxation after a long overnight flight or a thrilling safari experience in the nearby national parks.

Built by the Germans as a centre of colonial administration in the early 20th century, Arusha was a sleepy town with a garrison stationed at the old boma, with a few shops around a grassy roundabout. From its backwater status amidst the farmlands and plantations of northern Tanzania, Arusha is now one of the country’s most prosperous towns.

The site for the United Nations Criminal Tribunal on the Rwandan genocide and the headquarters for the Tripartite commission for East African Co-operation, Arusha is a major regional centre of Tanzanian diplomacy and international relations.

Activities in Arusha

For those short on time, day trip safaris can comfortably be arranged into Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park.

Relaxing

Head for nearby Arusha National Park for a perfect antidote to the bustle and traffic of downtown Arusha.

Getting Around

For those without chartered transport, taxis are plentiful in Arusha. Walking around town is generally not recommended for travellers – hotels often provide their own taxi services with knowledgeable English-speaking drivers.
