Explore Jordan’s Only Arab Castle
Northern Jordan, Jordan
North of Amman and located conveniently close to Jerash lies Jordan’s only remaining Arab-built castle. Constructed by a nephew of the Muslim warrior Salahadin it affords great views over the countryside from its ramparts, now reconstructed to provide an excellent impression of what the castle must have been like in its heyday.
Background
Salahadin and his army fought a never-ending battle with the Crusaders in the 12th century and this castle provided both a strategic point in managing the communication routes running from southern Jordan to Syria and being within striking distance of the Crusaders’ castle of Belvoir in the Galilee.
It was enlarged after its founder’s death but then destroyed by the Mongols who swept through in 1260 only to be rebuilt during later Mameluke times. It was occupied as late as the 17th century but strong earthquakes heralded its demise.
Recently restored the castle is most definitely a worthwhile visit and provides great views over the biblical Gilead Hills of northern Jordan.
