Immediately and unmistakably recognisable the Leaning Tower is Pisa’s best-known attraction. Standing in the Piazza dei Miracoli it is the campanile or free-standing bell tower of the beautiful Duomo cathedral, which stands next door. Climb to the top for views over the piazza and city and wander the area to appreciate its amazing angles, then head inside the Duomo for an unforgettable visit to some of the world’s greatest buildings.

Construction of the Leaning Tower commenced in 1174 by Bonanno Pisano. The unstable ground on which it was being built caused work to stop when the tower had reached its third storey as it was by then sinking into the ground. For some 90 years the tower sat thus, then work started again and it was completed by Giovanni di Simone and Tommano Simone (son of Andreo Pisano) who crowned the tower with the belfry. The tower is Romanesque in style and is comprised of six open galleries, each separated by a cornice, with columns creating a series of arches in bands around the tower. The base has a series of large blind arcades decorated with geometrical patterns.

The top of the Leaning Tower can be reached by climbing 294 steps which rise a necessarily spiral fashion on the inner side of the tower walls.

The Leaning Tower sits next to the wonderful Duomo cathedral, itself a masterpiece of design by the great architect Buschetto and dates from 1063. The Duomo is designed as a Latin cross and is a mix of largely Romanesque and other architectural styles. It contains some precious works of art and is a must see when visiting the square.

Close by is the Baptistery, the immense circular structure crowned by an amazing dome.
