Set at an altitude of 1220 meters and crowning the highest peak of the Aravalli Hills in the far south of Rajasthan, Mount Abu is the state’s only hill station and is certainly one of the prettiest in the country. Today it is known for its rich vegetation, thick forests and superb marble temples, rivalling even those at Ranakpur.
Described as an oasis in a desert and the Olympus of Rajasthan Mt Abu stands on a peak of the Aravallis separated from the main range by a deep gorge. It is not only one of the prettiest hill stations in the country, but a major Rajput and Jain pilgrimage centre. The approach is amazing after the desert lands passed through en route, winding up through forested hills and alpine-esque slopes to arrive in the cool climate of the town.
The legend goes that a 'yagna' was performed here and four Agnikula or fireborn Rajput clans - the Chauhans, Parmaras, Pratiharas and Solankis were created out of fire. Since the 11th century, Mount Abu has been an important Vaishnavite and Shivite pilgrimage centre, but now it has gained importance as a Jain pilgrim centre.

The town’s Nakki Lake provides a focal point; picturesquely set amidst hills it is popular for boating. Horse riding and longer walks can also be arranged.
