As capital of Honduras and a city with a long history, Tegucigalpa is not without its colonial charm. But this charm collides with the vibrant and modern city of today. Set in the highlands with easy access to the small Pacific coast of the country, the city is an ideal starting point from which to explore southern Honduras.
The once mining city of Tegucigalpa, one of the most important and wealthy, was not always the country's capital. The colonial city of Comayagua, not too far away, was the old centre of Government. They say President Marco Aurelio Soto in the late 1800s moved the capital to punish the people of Comayagua for publicly criticising his wife.
Its lack of traditional Spanish layout can make Tegucigalpa difficult to navigate on foot. The somewhat arduous terrain at 3000ft up the side of a mountain made the construction of a central plaza and streets emanating from it a little tricky. Besides, it was founded as a mining centre, not a city.
Later though, as the town became wealthy and grew, a fair amount of colonial architecture developed, and central Tegucigalpa merged with also-growing Comayaguela across the river.
Attractions in Tegucigalpa
As one might expect, Tegucigalpa dominates Honduran cultural life with Cathedrals, museums such as the National Art Gallery and National Museum of Honduras, and theatres such as Manuel Bonilla. And the capital city has all the trappings of modern life that one might want in its commercial district.
For outdoor pursuits, there is the Picacho Park within the city limits, plus the Valley of Angels and La Tigra National Park a short distance outside the city.
