Background

Flores dates from 9th century and was formally called Tayasal when it was a Mayan settlement. It was here that the last independent Maya state held out against the Spanish conquerors who finally conquered the island in 1697, and ultimately destroyed it.

From the ruins arose the modern city of Flores which was named after Cirilo Flores, one of the first Guatemaltecos to call for independence from the colonial powers. Built over the old city of Tayasal, in the central plaza you can still see some of the original stelaes.

Relaxing

Enjoy a drink or meal at one of the lakeside restaurants whilst watching the sunset.

Flores

A great way to enjoy the lake and see Flores from a different perspective is to hire a "launcha" (wooden motorboat) for a tour of the lake or to make a visit to the zoo on the small island of Petencito. The zoo houses raccoons, monkeys, jaguars, as well as other animals that have been rescued by the Association of Rescue and Conservation of Wildlife.

Cuevas de Actun Kan, at the edge of Santa Elena town, is a large cave, which you can explore via a well lit circular route. There are some interesting formations that resemble animals and people as well as plenty of stalactites and stalagmites.
