In the far South East of the archipelago, Española Island – also known simply as Hood – is the oldest of the Galapagos Islands. Here, life has had the longest amount of time to evolve and subsequently the island is home to some fascinating endemic species, meaning travellers have to come to Española to see them.
Española is a classic shield volcano shape and is one of the most visited islands in Galapagos. Through focussed conservation efforts, introduced species such as goats and rats have been eradicated and the isle is considered to be one of the purest of all the Galapagos Islands.
The island’s endemic life includes colourful marine iguanas, Española lava lizards, Hood mockingbirds and several species of finch. The famous waved albatross which returns to Española each year to breed, can only be found in one other location – Isla de la Plata – off the coast of mainland Ecuador.
Attractions in Española Island
Española's two visitor sites are amongst the favourites in Galapagos. Gardner Bay offers excellent swimming and snorkelling as well as a great beach, and Punta Suarez has one of the most impressive selections of wildlife along the island’s western tip.
