West Falkland
Western Islands, Falkland Islands
Smaller than its neighbour to the east, West Falkland Island is the ultimate place to escape the rat-race of everyday life. With a tiny scattered population of just over 100 people, this is remote and wild. Here, Mother Nature rules supreme and there are many lively colonies of fascinating birds, such as the rockhopper penguin or the brown-browed albatross, which are a must-see for any visitor.
Background
In the Falkland Islands, anything outside Stanley is known as ‘Camp’, and this is Camp proper with only scattered farmsteads where the priorities are sheep farming and conservation.
Four main ranges of rolling hills reach their peak at Mount Adam, which is about 700 meters high, and beautiful beaches are bordered with dramatic cliffs that plunge into the cool seas and teem with an abundance of wildlife.
