Place to Visit: Dahab

Adventure Capital of Egypt

Sinai and Red Sea Coast, Egypt

The name ‘Dahab’, meaning ‘gold’ in Arabic, is no doubt a reference to the stunning mountains that plunge dramatically towards the shore behind the town. Located halfway along the east coast of the Sinai Peninsula Dahab has grown dramatically over recent years and is now recognised as Egypt’s adventure capital.

Great Reasons To Visit

  • Coral gardens galore – check out some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world
  • Explore the dramatic interior on a 4WD safari or organised trek
  • Look over the surrounding peaks at sunrise from atop Mt Sinai, then visit remarkable St Katherine’s Monastery

Background

A hippy-ish hangout in the 70s and 80s the laid back, somewhat funky resort of Dahab has over the last 25 years metamorphosed from sleepy Bedouin village to become the best place in the country to indulge in any number of adventurous activities, from camel trekking to diving and 4WD safaris – and even mixes of these! At the end of the days’ activities the beachfront cafés with their chill-out areas strewn with cushions and rugs are still the best place to relax.

Relaxing

Dahab is smaller, more informal than Sharm el Sheikh and is well-known for its beachside cafes where felled palm trees covered with rugs, kilims and cushions provide great places to relax.

Dahab

The attraction of Dahab is not hard to see, with its dramatic backdrop of mountains and amazing sea life it is a great place to take a break from exploring the country. You can explore the mountainous interior by 4WD or camel, use Dahab as a base from which to travel to and climb Mt Sinai, or from where to explore its underwater wonders.
