The small town of La Fortuna sits below the impressive volcano of Arenal and lies close to the large Arenal Lake, not far from Caño Negro National Park and close to some fantastic waterfalls, hot springs and canopy walks, making it an essential place to visit for most travellers to Costa Rica.
Arenal Volcano is a classic conical shape, which has erupted almost continually since the late 1960s. Here, load rumbles can be heard and shudders felt as this mighty landform regularly pumps out plumes of ash and spews hot rocks down its steep slopes. Visitors can often also witness the glow of lava gliding from the caldera in the twighlight.
Volcanic trails skirt the distant lava fields below the peak and forest walks lead to breathtaking waterfalls and canopy walks on the greener flanks of the volcano. The nearby Sky Train takes families high up into the canopy and evenings are often enjoyed soaking in the hot springs before enjoying some fine food and – if the night is clear and luck is on your side – watching the lava glow from the distant peak.
