Chã das Caldeiras is set in a simply dramatic location on a circular plateau (the remains of the former volcano), some 8 km in diameter and 1,700m above the sea. This picturesque place is home to two communities of people in Portela and Bangaeira.

Flanked by a mountainous wall which in some places rises to over a 1,000m high, Chã das Caldeiras is an ideal base from which to explore the volcanic landscapes of Fogo island – and to possibly to make an ascent of Pico de Fogo.

From Chã das Caldeiras several walks are possible on typical volcanic terrain, including one of the highlights of a visit to Cape Verde – an ascent of Pico de Fogo volcano (roughly 5 hours up and down). Rewarding hikers with stunning views over the crater and across to the island of Santiago, the ascent from Chã das Caldeiras is not for the faint hearted and should always be accompanied by an experienced local guide. Often buffered by wind, the walk up is slow going and tough. The descent, by contrast, is simply exhilarating – often literally running through deep volcanic ash.

Attractions in Chã das Caldeiras

Other than as a base for hikes, the main attraction of Chã das Caldeiras is the village itself – lava is used as a building material, blending local homes perfectly into the volcanic background.

Over the years the local community have become adept at farming, cultivating the fertile volcanic landscape to grow fields of fruit trees, coffee and vines. Local grapes are harvested to produce ‘manecom’, a totally organic and very fruity wine.
