The beach town of Sihanoukville has views to offshore islands and is surrounded on 3 sides by the Bay of Thailand, whose waters lap soft white sand. The town itself is undergoing change, just in which direction it has yet to be seen, however for now it remains the closest thing Cambodia has to a resort, and with much to see in the region is well worth a look…
Building at Sihanoukville commenced in the 1950’s when the then king, Sihanouk, oversaw the construction of a deep-water port. A few hotels followed but in reality Kep along the coast to the east was the main draw beach-wise. In the mid-1970’s the overthrow of the government say a name change to Kampong Som, then later, back to Sihoukville; both names remain in use today. In the early Noughties the town is experimenting with which direction it wants to go in with the choices of Pattaya, Ko Samui or the laid back funky charm of Ko Phangan in Thailand all vying with each other.
Attractions in Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is not as sophisticated as those destinations in Thailand in any way and yet it provides a great spot from which to explore - the area has some truly great beaches as well as Ream National Park and Kbal Chhay Falls as well as the offshore islands accessible on boat trips – Koh Pos and Koh Tas amongst them.
Activities in Sihanoukville
A stay can take as long as you like – there are several beaches to enjoy as well as the area to explore. A week would allow a good look at the area.
Relaxing
After a day on one of the areas 5+ beaches here enjoy a good meal in one of the many up and coming restaurants and finish it off with a beer in one of the many bars.
Getting Around
Most people tend to hire bikes as the town is big enough to explore on 2 wheels.
