Kratie is a small country town on the way to the Cambodia/Laos border, a great place to see the increasingly rare Irrawaddy dolphin, enjoy a cracking local market, some great colonial architecture and get out and about in rural Cambodia. More and more travellers are coming here – a town on the up and worth a look if in the region.
Kratie town sits on the banks of the Mekong and is a small market town with a modest and growing tourist trade. It gives its name to the province and is perhaps best known amongst Cambodian people for the rare Irrawaddy dolphin that can be found in ever-decreasing numbers in the strech of Mekong to the north of town.
Much colonial architecture from the French period remains as the bombing raids that affected other towns seemed to spare Kratie somewhat. It has the distinction of being the first Cambodian town to have been "liberated" by the Khmer Rouge.
Attractions in Kratie
The town is famous for the Irrawaddy dolphins – definitely worth a boat trip as they are declining in number. Phnom Sombok is a temple on a hill north of town whilst a moto ride into the countryside will take you to little-visited villages.
Activities in Kratie
Allow a full day and overnight in Kratie before moving on – enough time to see all the areas attractions.
Relaxing
The riverside makes a good place to hang out and watch the comings and goings of people and boats.
Getting Around
Kratie is a place you explore on foot using a moto to get out into the countryside and to Kampie from where the dolphins can be seen on a boat trip.
