Vast Land of Salt Pans and Solitude
Central Botswana, Botswana
The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are the remains of a once great river that ran dry as a result of seismic uplift that shifted the flow of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers to the east. The great space and solitude of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is the best reason to visit it. By day, sit and contemplate under a bright blue sky. By night, the Milky Way presents an explosive display of stars, unparalleled anywhere else on earth.
Background
The contrast of shimmering salt pans and a huge lake dotted with palm islands during the wets season are irresistible. During the wet season there is a huge migration of zebra, abundant flamingos and other migratory species. It is a true bird lover’s paradise.
