This cosmopolitan town lies on 2 adjacent bays separated by the collapsed crater of Monte da Guia. The capital of Faial island and the liveliest and most eye-catching town in the Azores. It is a haven for yachtsmen and whale watchers, filled with colourful yachts which stop here during there voyage across the North Atlantic. The bustling international atmosphere is characteristic of Horta, where yachtsmen, visitors and locals swap dreams and adventures over a beer or a coffee.

Horta has always been an important transit point in the Atlantic. In 1893, it became famous around the world when the first leg of the transatlantic submarine cable between the US and Lisbon was completed with Horta as a major junction point. In 1919 the first successful transatlantic air crossing used Horta as a refuelling stop and now it is a safe haven for thousands of yachtsmen. The international nature of the town has brought with it better quality restaurants than in the much of the Azores and even a few boutiques. But is it still a traditional looking town with beautiful churches and municipal buildings and of course the Pousada Santa Cruz, the 16th century fortress, now a hotel, with wonderful views over the marina.

Attractions in Horta

Horta is full of things to see and do. A must though is a visit to the world famous Peter’s café Sport for a Gin and Tonic, a visit to Horta Museum to see the pith art, a stroll round the marina, a swim at Porto Pim sandy beach and dinner at the fortress.

Activities in Horta

Charter a yacht to explore the volcanic coastline, take a whale and dolphin watching trip or go diving and see the large pelagics living around the island.

Relaxing

Sip a G&T at Peter’s café sport as you reminisce about the whales and dolphins you’ve just seen!

Getting Around

There are direct flights from Lisbon to Faial. Once on Faial, it is best to either hire a car or use the local taxi drivers as the buses are not that regular or convenient.
