With its semi tropical landscape, Flores is reputed to be the most beautiful island of the archipelago – it is a stunning island with jagged terrain and beautiful flora. Waterfalls plunge down green cliffs into the ocean, the landscape has deep creases formed by eons of volcanic activity and tiny whitewashed villages nestle on the coastal plains.
Flores and Corvo are on the western side of the mid-Atlantic ridge and are geologically part of the New World while the other 7 islands lie on the European plate. They feel remote and are not large with Flores just 17km long and Corvo a mere 6km long. Corvo, the smallest island of the group, with a population of just 400 is essentially one green crater with the friendly town of Vila Nova is the only settlement.
Most people visiting the islands are lured by the beautiful scenery, the wonderful walks and the sense of tranquillity. More and more birdwatchers are also visiting the islands as Corvo especially is a great place for spotting American vagrants in September/October.
Attractions in Flores & Corvo
Flores: The landscape is what makes Flores so spectacular and the west coast is the highlight with its cascading waterfalls, romantic pools, and quiet footpaths. In the interior are the seven extinct craters; once active volcanoes, they are now beautiful mountain lakes. Everywhere is greenery, plants and flowers and edging the fields in strips that stretch for miles are the sky blue hydrangeas.
Relaxing
Take a dip in the romantic cod fish pool at the foot of a dramatic waterfall.

There are inter-island flights to Flores from Faial, Sao Miguel and Terceira and to Corvo from Flores, Terceira and Faial. Once on the island, you are best to either hire a car or use taxis which are very reasonable.
