Hobart is Australia’s smallest capital city and the easiest to explore. The city lies between the broad Derwent River and the fluted peaks of Mount Wellington, rising 1,270 metres on its western boundary.
The first thing you notice as you drive into Hobart from the airport is how the landscape defines the city. Its suburbs spread north and south along both banks of the Derwent River, a broad, deep harbour whose historic docklands are the cultural hub of the community.
The city was founded in 1804, built by convict labour. It has some of Australia’s best examples of Georgian architecture and these enrich an already picturesque cityscape.
Attractions in Hobart
Most travellers wander through the mellow sandstone Georgian warehouses of Salamanca Place and Sullivans Cove checking out craft shops, bookshops, restaurants and cafes or people watching. In nearby Battery Point, the city’s first suburb, grand old mansions and simple fishermen’s cottages sit side by side.
Activities in Hobart
River cruises are a great way to appreciate the city’s beauty and marine wildlife, while a twilight dockside paddle in a kayak is a magical experience. Behind the river and the central business district, Mount Wellington dominates the horizon, its fluted cliffs emblematic of the rugged wilderness waiting to be explored in the west and south-west of the island. You can bushwalk past these cliffs to the summit, or descend the mountain with the wind in your hair on a guided cycle tour.

Hobart has restaurants to suit all palates and budgets – many of them offering a range of local cool climate wines to compliment your meal.

I had wanted to visit Tasmania since a child - has one of those names! Hobart is the perfect introduction to the island. Small but relaxed and vibrant with friendly locals. Great cafe culture, great architecture with a pleasing eco feel to everything.
