Fjord-like Lake of Albania
Northern Albania, Albania
The local ferry journey along the northern Albanian lake of Komani is regarded by some as one of the world’s classic boat trips, comparable perhaps with some of the dramatic landscapes of the Norwegian fjords or perhaps the ferry from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales in Chile.
Background
Lake Komani was created as a result of the construction of a huge hydro-electric system constructed in the 1970’s. The lake is narrow and twisting with sheer cliffs dropping right down into the water in some places. Dramatic waterfalls tumble down the cliffs into the lake and from time to time terraced fields and tiny villages cling to the dramatic landscape.
