Place to Visit: Korca

Little Paris of Albania

Eastern Albania, Albania

The southern city of Korca is situated on a vast plain and is surrounded by mountains in an area rich in both prehistoric sites and places of great natural beauty. As a centre of culture and trade it has charming villas with beautiful gardens testament to the past.

Great Reasons To Visit

  • Base for visiting the famous village of Voskopoja.

Background

Korca has been one of the cultural and trade centres of this area for many years. It was one of the main centres of Albanian renaissance, which created a sense of national identity and ultimately paved the way to Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912. It is also the town where the first Albanian language school was opened in 1887, which has since been turned into a museum.

Relaxing

Find a quiet spot in the old town and contemplate the grand old days of this important place.

Korca

Korca does have an historic town centre though it has been neglected over the years. Many buildings with native columns and wrought-iron fittings can, though, still be seen. Korca does have three museums of note but perhaps more importantly does make an ideal base for visiting the famous (and remote) village of Voskopoja – once one of Europe’s biggest towns.
