Mauritius

Vibrant Island of Mauritius & Remote Rodrigues

Mauritius is not just tropical beaches, plentiful watersports, sailing, golf, luxury hotels and fine cuisine. It does of course have all the ingredients that go to make a perfect holiday for those seeking pure rest and relaxation. But for the more curious traveller seeking different experiences and a little adventure, this remote tropical island offers a whole host of attractions and activities.

Caressed by balmy trade winds for much of the year – it has just enough rain to nurture lush rainforests and to temper the heat so it never gets too hot. Jungle-clad mountains sweep down to the sugar plantations which predominate over much of the island. Although the infamous Dodo bird has long since gone, the name is still alive in a local blend of tea, produced on one of the island’s picturesque tea estates.

Country lanes are lined with bougainvillea and flame trees, exotic tropical gardens bear witness to the diversity of nature. Popular activities such as hiking, cycling and horse-riding provide an alternative to the wide range of watersports available. The ethnic mix of the people of Mauritius – Indians, Africans, Europeans and Chinese – is reflected in a varied local cuisine. For travellers seeking true independence, self-drive is the most flexible means of visiting the island’s main places of interest and attractions, though hiring a driver/guide is also possible.
