This half-day trip takes us east of Salalah to little-visited settlements and historic sites.

We start with a visit the fishing village of Taqa, an old town with an interesting castle surrounded by watchtowers, and Taqa's famous stone houses. Next we continue to Khor Rori creek, the site of the ruined city of Samhuram, capital of ancient Arabia’s frankincense trade (and which we see from the outside). Excavations have produced evidence of an ancient city with trade links by sea to Far Eastern destinations and even with distant Greece.

Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar, was an important town as early as the 9th century for it’s trade in frankincense, horses and slaves. We'll see some of the old houses
famous for their wood-carvings and if lucky see boatloads of fish arriving into the harbour.

One of Dhofar’s best-known historic sites is Bin Ali’s Tomb. The twin domed structure is the tomb of Mohamed bin Ali who died in 1135 AD and is a fine example of medieval architecture.
