The views from the top by the lighthouse are amazing - the very strong wind gives you that vulnerable feeling of how powerful the elements can be in this area. The walk upto the top gets your lungs pumping or there is a little train, but I think the walk definitely gives a better experience. Well worth the drive. Just a warning if you buy any sweets or snacks from the shop - the baboons can be somewhat aggressive!
We had such a great 2 week tour in Western Cape. Cape Town is amazing - lively bars and restaurants, great history and architecture, the Ocean and Table Mountain. Stellenbosch for the wine tours....stay a while...we only did one day and not enough time to fully relax. And the Garden Route, which was a great tour full of amazing views, woodlands, secluded coast line, hidden coves and great walks.
We loved this City. Table Mountain and the Ocean just give this city such an amazingly different feel than other Cities. During the day there is plenty to see, great architecture and history. In the evening the bars are buzzing, super restaurants and great wine.......plus a little dancing. People always talk about the wind being bad, but it does help to keep the temperature to a really nice level. We will definitely go back some time.
We couldn't believe that in almost a residential area this little wildlife haven could exist. Really well set up with good boardwalk area to get very close to the Penguins without feeling like you are impacting their natural behaviour. Well worth a visit.
We stayed here for 2 nights recently. Our room on the top floor was very nice - fantastically large bed, which after 5 days on tour was super. The food in the Patat restaurant was yummy - really interesting food. Good location for the hotel makes it a great base when staying in the City. Try the outdoor jacuzzi on the top floor - put a G&T in your hand as well and not a bad way to relax after a hard day!
Stellenbosch town and its surrounding areas are absolutely stunning. This is not adventure travel, but when you have been touring round for a few weeks this place just lets you relax and unwind. The town centre is beautiful, with really nice bars, cafes, serving great food.....and wine of course! We only had a day in the area as we were finishing our trip heading back to Cape Town - however next time we will spend 2-3 days just relaxing. Visit one of many wine estates for a wine tasting (most offer it). We know very little about wine, apart from how to drink it.....so the tasting was good fun - although it seemed rude to spit it out! So, good for a day trip from Cape Town but I will back for the full wine tour next time.
