Has anyone got any opinions on the Serengetti and the Ngorongoro Crater, as to whether they are worth visiting or too many tourists?
Any other ideas?

Has anyone climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and is it difficult?

Hi Andrea,
We recently trekked Kili and as you can see from our profile we are 'young' retirees, so although it is not easy, it is certainly achievable. We selected to do the Rongai route which is the easiest of the options and it was absolutely wonderful. The Rongai route is an ascent or a trek, not a climb, so there is no technical knowledge needed - just good walking boots and some determination. As an aside, we trekked with Ahsante Tours who are on this site, and they made a real difference - the whole operation from food to equipment/guides made the trek so much easier. Be careful of some local guides that say they will get you up and down in 5 days - it is not possible. Good luck anyway and I hope you feel the adrenalin rush that we did, as you feel on top of the world!

Just a quick comment on the Serengetti and Ngorongoro area. It is quite popular as you would expect, but we never felt like we were in a game park or zoo, as the expanse of land is huge and the whole experience was amazing - for us it was a must see and now it is a must see again!!

Kili is a fantastic climb!

I was lucky enough to get out there about 10 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the trek - the memories will stay with me for ever.

I remember the altitude was the great leveller - you never know who it's going to effect...

Some of the youngsters in the group were surprisingly hit by the altitude and struggled, whereas a couple of less active older folk just took their time and made it to the top.

You'll certainly need to have a reasonable level of fitness, but I think the best advice I was given for this climb was the Swahili phrase 'pole pole', meaning 'slowly slowly'. Take your time, enjoy the hike and with a little bit of luck you'll get there.

Try visiting during the migration - I was in the Serengeti around Naabi Hill in January a few years ago and it was an amazing experience - thousands upon thousands of wildebeest and zebra stalked by lions, cheetah and hyenas - amazing!

Andrea,

Let me know how your trip goes, or if you find any useful information.
I'm also planning on doing a trip similar to yours; July/Aug time.

Cheers
Ruth
