Somewhere off the eastern coast of South America are a collection of islands that were little spoken about until the early 1980s, when their existence was catapulted to the world's news headlines.

Twenty five years now have passed since the Falklands Conflict, but the islands and islanders remain firmly on the map. Today this archipelago of over 700 islands is a popular stopping point for cruises en route to Antarctica and South Georgia, as well as offering a wonderful choice of wilderness, wildlife and historical holidays in their own right.

I was lucky enough to visit the Falklands with some Argentinean journalists in October 2005 and we shared several incredible days on the islands, visiting welcoming homesteads, discovering incredible rookeries of brown-browed albatross and rock-hopper penguins and witnessing several battlefield sites that remain testament to conflict.

We’ve currently got several trips on board MV Polar Star that take in the Falkland Islands (a great little ship) and we hope to be able to showcase one of the islands’ best local tour operators very soon.
