Happy, we spent last New Year at a local restaurant in the Sultanahmet called Giritli on Keresteci Haki Sokak, Cankurtaran. The restaurant was full, mainly with locals, and the price included 5 courses, wine and raki, two gypsy bands to serenade us (lots of singing, dancing, and clapping!) and a belly dancer at midnight. We had the best New Year's Eve!! The shops opened later the usual on New Year's Day, I suspect because New Year is a BIG celebration in Istanbul. Lots of the bigger hotels have New Year's menus/events too but you do have to book. The only other thing is that we were warned to stay away from Taksim Square on New Years Eve, for safety reasons. I've added two photos to my profile of our evening. Have a great time!!
