I've been trying to think of a different way to see Asia and in particular Thailand and have decided to join a charity trek into the Thailand jungle next March for the charity Breakthrough.

Has anyone else ever done anything like this before? Do you think this is a good way to see the 'real' Thailand away from all the tourists and tourist traps?

I'm really excited about this trek and hopefully it will be a really unique experience ....

Sounds good to me.

These challenges are generally worthwhile and are usually arranged through reliable UK/Aussie/US tour operators in any case, as charities don't have the time or expertise to arrange themselves. They can be quite expensive and there's a fair amount of fundraising to be done but often take you off the beaten track.

The altruistic side aside i'd say just make sure that you'll be spending time in areas that you can't get to under ordinary circumstances - or at least without a helluva lot of hassle - not easy in Thailand.

If you decide that you want to do it yourself after all the guys at Intrepid Thailand (see here )know the country inside out and can arrange travel on a budget right through to top of the range luxury trips. If you give them a brief I bet they'll come up with some really unusual suggestions.

Go for it I say!
