Volcanic activity in Ecuador

Posted on:
Friday, 11th January 2008

Just as we launch of Ecuador on addictedtotravel.com, there are rumblings of heightened alerts for the Tungurahua Volcano.

Our Local Experts in Ecuador have told me that the Ecuadorian Geophysics Institute has issued a special report stating that the activity of Tungurahua Volcano has increased considerably since January 4 and could become more intense in coming days.

Both the internal activity, detected by seismic movements and the external activity, with strong audible explosions spewing vapor and ashes have reached a level of activity similar to that observed a few days before the violent eruptions of July 14 and August 16, 2006.

Under these circumstances, the authorities have ordered the evacuation of 300 families who live in the western slopes of the volcano as a precautionary measure after the volcano started rumbling and spewing smoke.

The current UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice states that:

Quote:
In 2007, there was increased volcanic activity at the Tungurahua, Reventador and Sangay volcanoes. In 2008 Tungurahua volcanic activity has increased significantly. You should exercise caution if travelling to Baños, and in the immediate areas around Tungurahua. You are advised not to climb or hike in the surrounding areas of Reventador and Sangay volcanoes and monitor local media for activity.

In the past, the ash has caused problems with air traffic; but apart of this, it should not affect travellers' trips in Ecuador.

For more information, see the Ecuadorian Geophysics Institute website.
