A fantastic day out enjoying one of the Mediterranean’s fastest growing activities and one suitable for anyone who loves the water - sea-kayaking along Kekova Sound. Here we have a chance to paddle over the ruins of a sunken city on Kekova island as well as visiting the village of Simena whose castle looks out over the village.
Itinerary
We drive the 40 or so minutes from Kaş to Uçağiz where we arrive at our kayak centre. Here we are issued with our kayaking kit and have a safety briefing along with instruction of how to paddle - something which is surprisingly easy even for absolute beginners.
Next we paddle to Kekova island for a swim at Tersane Bay then, at a leisurely pace we paddle gently along the edge of Kekova island viewing the ruins underneath us which includes ceramics, amphorae and the original harbour breakwater, and those above us on the higher parts of the island. From here we paddle across to the mainland, to Simena village, where we enjoy a delicious lunch.
Those who wish to can climb up to the village's ruined castle for panoramic views over the area before we set off again this time back to Uçağiz. On our way we pass partially submerged sarcophagi and paddle through a mini-archipelago before heading toward Uçağiz.
Finally we arrive in Uçağiz and the kayak centre from where at around 16:00hrs we depart for Kaş.

Whilst on holiday in Kas my husband and I took the opportunity to enjoy a day of sea kayaking at Kekova. After a safety run through we set off in the refreshingly cool and calm waters, stopping off at a small beach for a swim. We then reached the sunken city ruins which can easily be seen through the clear waters and are an amazing sight. At the village of Simena we paddled right up to one of the restaurants, tied up our kayaks and had a leisurely lunch before paddling back to our starting point.
Having never been in a sea kayak before, I was a complete beginner and went in a double kayak with my husband. I found the day to be very enjoyable, with a great guide and once you get the hang of paddling, quite easy.
