Early in the morning we take the ferry with our local guide across the Nile to local stables where we meet with our donkeys. Here we mount up and set off following the ancient path up and over the mountain used by the master craftsmen thousands of years ago when they were building the Valley of the Kings. The view from on high over the lush fields is stunning with the soft morning light casting a yellow glow over the scene below.
We head down into the valley on foot and then are able to enter 3 tombs with our guide explaining the history of each pharaoh and the meaning of the beautiful if somewhat complicated tomb paintings. We’ll hear about the Book of the Dead, learn why the Ka was important what roles Isis, Osiris and Anubis played in the daily lives of the pharaoh’s.
It is also possible to enter the tomb of Tutankhamun to see where Carter discovered the boy-pharaoh in 1922 (optional).
After our explorations we head back to our mounts and ride down to the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. One of Luxor’s most famous and important ancient sites it sits on a large plateau partly built into the mountain behind. Here we’ll hear of her expedition to the Land of Punt and see the famous friezes. Finally we ride back to the stables through the fields of sugar cane to take the ferry back to Luxor.
After lunch we are collected from our accommodation by driver and horse-drawn carriage, called caleshes locally, and transported in style the 3km south to the avenue of sphinxes leading up to the massive First Pylon of Egypt’s best known and most spectacular temple complex here at Karnak.
Our guide will explain the history of the temple and how each pharaoh built additions to it over countless centuries. We see the forest of pillars which is the Hypostyle Hall and Hatsheput’s Obelisk along with the famous wall of Ramses the Great, the Sacred Pool and Giant Scarab.
After our visit we return to our carriage and are driven back to our accommodation in town. A great and unusual way to explore these two important sites.
