An early-morning transfer see us drive the short distance to Aswan airport from where we fly to Abu Simbel, just a few kilometres from the Sudanese border and inside ancient Nubia.
The massive statues of Ramses greet the visitor today as they did thousands of years ago when these colossal figures were constructed. Demonstrating the power of Ramses ll to invaders from the south they must have made those heading north think twice as they followed the river. Flanked by the almost-as-impressive temple of Nefertari the entire site is truly awe-inspiring and never fails to disappoint. A local site guide will explain the history of the temples, relating how they were moved by UNESCO and how the light plays upon the inner sanctum of the great Ramses temple twice a year.
After our visit the return flight brings us back to Aswan Airport from where we transfer to our accommodation. This is an efficient use of time whilst in Aswan and enables more to be seen in less time.
