Refugio Amazonas is built using a combination of traditional native materials (wood, palm fronds, wild cane and clay) and architecture and modern day eco-lodge technology. The lodge consists of three wings of 8 rooms connected by raised boardwalks to a central, two story, 20 foot tall common area. This area has distinct ambiences serving as lobby, dining room, bar, shop and lounge. This structure is the heart of Refugio’s atmosphere: it provides great canopy views of the surrounding forest – from a hammock … and is just a whistle away from a drink!
The entire roof of the lodge is constructed using high quality crisneja palm fronds, whereas the floors are of tropical mahogany. The rooms complex is built of three 32 meter long structures with eight rooms per facility, for a total of 24 double bedrooms.
Each room has a private bathroom with cold water only. Rooms and bathrooms are separated by drapes. Each room has beds, mosquito nets, bedside tables and hammocks or lounge chairs.

We provide self-service three course meals at Refugio Amazonas. Meals consist of soup or appetizers, salad, main course, and desserts combining Peruvian and international cuisine.
All fresh fruits and salads are thoroughly disinfected before serving. We also provide at all times unlimited amounts of boiled, filtered, cooled drinking water, coffee or tea and we provide fruit juices during the meals. If any visitor has special dietary requirements, we are happy to make individual arrangements, but please notify us.
At Rainforest Expedition we develop contextual educational experiences that generate the sustainable development of the natural destinations where we operate.
At Refugio Amazonas we offer quality natural and cultural activities to keep your agenda full for your three night stay: caiman searchers at night, giant river otters at an oxbow lake, parrots at a clay lick, a canopy tower, a Brazil nut camp and a farm visit.
The lodge also offers activities specially developed and implemented for Families and Soft Adventure travelers.
For Soft Adventure travelers Refugio Amazonas provides several options. For example there is the option to paddle up in a Kayak a slow creek for several hours as it descends from the depths of the Tambopata National Reserve. The silent progress and narrow creekbed will increase our chances for wildlife sightings. Another option provides, while replicating the daily work of macaw researchers, and climbing up a 30 meter tree with a rope, harness and jumar, a macaws eye view of the forest.
For families we have developed activities and programmes that fit both families with kids as well as families with teens.
For Kids we have two short trails designed for children with the help of ANIA, an environmental education NGO. Kids aged 6-12 hike with a guide through a challenging (but short) trail where they follow maps, solve riddles and find clues that will lead them to Ania’s “gifts”. The trail teaches kids how people live in the rainforest and leave a valuable message from Ania, “a girl born in the depths of the rain forest to fill our hearts with hope”. The concept, the story and the trail are trademarked by ANIA, a non profit with the mission of creating 100,000 hectares of “Tierras de los Niños” (Children’s Lands) - private protected areas in the management of children.
For Teens we have activities that are adventurous but safe. They can paddle a Kayak or climb up a tree. Both of these activities are perfectly safe and require no previous experience. Other options are fishing and camping near a Mammal Clay Lick Camp.
All these activities have an extra cost and should be therefore please be booked beforehand.

| Fair Trade Information |
Rainforest Expeditions was born out of a conservation ethic. Work in Refugio Amazonas has just begun. Lodge construction was completed in May 2006. Since our establishment in the small 200 hectare private reserve we have come to understand the role we need to play in the locality. Refugio Amazonas is positioned to directly influence the long – term health of the 250,000 hectare Tambopata National Reserve. It lies 20 kilometers from the Interoceanic Highway, on the opposite side of the Tambopata River.
In a decade, human encroachment can be expected to have reached the banks opposite to Refugio. Therefore Refugio and its area of influence need to act as an effective buffer between this belt of development and the Tambopata National Reserve behind us.
What we do to keep our operation green and clean; We separate and recycle all biodegradable material. All non-biodegradable material is taken by boat to the city dump. And all glass material is taken to the recycler in town. Secondly, we use only biodegradable soaps, shampoos, and laundry materials, which are completely inocous. We do not use solar energy, and turn on a generator during five hours a day for essential kitchen equipment and battery recharging. The lodge is lighted by wind lamps and refrigerators are gas powered.
