Lancrigg Organic Vegetarian Country House Hotel is located at the far end of the beautiful Easedale Valley, Grasmere, in the heart of the English Lake District.

Lancrigg is a beautiful Country House that enjoys a setting of timeless tranquillity in 30 acres of gardens and woodland overlooking peaceful Easedale. Starting life in the 17th century as a modest farmhouse,it was later renovated and enlarged with the considerable encouragement of William Wordsworth. The Lake Poets used regularly to meet here, and Charles Dickens stayed here on his trips to southern Scotland.

The Organic Vegetarian Hotel at Lancrigg was opened in 1985, by Robert and Janet Whittington, as an elegant and civilised guest house, serving delicious vegetarian home cooking. The 12 individually designed guest bedrooms all have private bathrooms (some with whirlpool baths), television, telephone and beverage tray. Each bedroom has unique features that reflect the country house and are cosy and comfortable.

Rooms & Rates

The rooms at Lancrigg are cosy Country House rooms, many with wonderful views of the Easedale Valley.

Azalea (1)

This pretty and peaceful room looks out over magnolias and azaleas - which in the spring is a delight of scent and colour. It has its own whirlpool spa bath, and a large double bed.

Coleridge (1)

A small room with an antique four foot wide brass bed and a view across the valley.

The private bathroom is directly across the passage from the bedroom. The room is ideally suited as a single, but may be booked as a double at a reduced rate.

Dickens (1)

The room has a four poster and a whirlpool bath. The view is across the valley to Silver Howe.

Easedale (1)

A spacious and peaceful South facing room on the ground floor. It is ensuite and the bed can be a twin or a 6ft wide double.

Franklin (1)

The cosy and romantic ensuite room is on the ground floor and has a handsome carved four poster bed, further enhanced by a Turkish rug and mahogany furniture.

John Richardson (1)

This exceptionally spacious room, which was originally John Richardson’s library, is now a beautiful bedroom to make a special occasion or holiday really memorable.

There are magnificent views across the valley of Easedale, which John Richardson described as ‘more beautiful than the valley of the Mandela’ and there is a private door into the garden. The room has a lot of character, one of the features being a wonderful unusual plasterwork ceiling.

There is a lace draped four poster bed and also a magnificent free standing bath actually in the room but cocooned within lace lined curtains. The private cloakroom is adjoining.

Kitty Crag (1)

Kitty Crag is a room in our nearby house five minutes walk through Lancrigg woods or a short drive by car.

It has its own entrance from the outside and is a cosy bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. It has a television (poor reception) and tea-making but no telephone.

Meals are taken in the hotel and guests are welcome to use the hotel facilities at any time.

Nightingale (1)

A cosy room with a double bed and ensuite bathroom. This room is also available as a single room.

Silver Howe (1)

With some of the best views from the hotel across the valley to Silver Howe, this romantic bedroom has a lace draped half tester bed.

The ensuite bathroom has a spacious corner bath.

Wainwright Suite (1)

Wainwright’s books on the footpaths and walks of the Lake District mountains are a bible to thousands of walkers and he has become a legendary figure. He was interviewed at Lancrigg during his television
series of the Coast to Coast walk.

The bedroom to this suite has a beautiful hand made four poster bed. A further room doubles as a separate sitting room or a child’s bedroom, with a double bed settee. The ensuite bathroom has a large bath and a separate shower cubicle.

Whittington (1)

A characterful and spacious double ensuite room with an attic feel, though only on the first floor.

There is a wonderful view across the valley to Juniper Howe and Blind Tarn Moss. It also makes an excellent family room.

Wordsworth (1)

Wordsworth features everywhere in Grasmere. However he did have very close connections with Lancrigg and its occupants, and wrote much of his poetry in our woods.

This enchanting bedroom has a double bed and a beautiful view across the valley from both the bedroom and the delightful ensuite bathroom.

This is a fantastic place to stay. Each bedroom is full of character and the food is just unbeatable - non-vegetarians may NEVER look at meat again!!!

To sit on the terrace looking across to the fells and a distant tumbling waterfall is the perfect escape from the stresses of 'normal' life.
