Responsible Travel

DEVELOPING A RESPONSIBLE COMMUNITY

All of our small team here at addictedtotravel.com care with a passion for the future of our amazing planet, its wildlife and its people. We are an ethical organisation that adheres to the principles of responsible travel and sustainable travel, fair trade, business ethics and corporate social responsibility. We recognise that our responsibility extends to all interested parties to this business including not only traveller and travel expert members of our travel community, but also local host communities, our planet, its wildlife and nature.

Supporting Projects, Charities & Good Causes

In addition to several projects that are close to our hearts at addictedtotravel.com, we invite our destination-based travel experts to forward suggestions of worthwhile projects which they support. Our commitment is to then create awareness of these projects on and through our site. Over time, through this initiative, we hope to create significant awareness of not just one or two projects around the world, but a wide variety of charities and good causes, conservation programmes, environmental protection schemes, and fair trade travel. Our fundamental belief is that all living things have a right to live on, and share, our amazing planet. Based on this belief, and developed over time, we aim to welcome a balanced mix of people, planet and wildlife-based projects to our travel community. Let's all aim to give something back when we travel.

Supporting Ecotourism Australia

About Ecotourism Australia

Ecotourism Australia was formed in 1991 and is Australia's national body for the ecotourism industry.

What is the Eco Certification Program?

The Eco Certification Program is a world first. It has been developed by industry for industry, addressing the need to identify genuine ecotourism and nature tourism operators in Australia. The Eco Certification Program is now being exported to the rest of the world as the International Ecotourism Standard.

Ecotourism and nature tourism certification provide industry, protected area managers, local communities and travellers with an assurance that a certified product is backed by a commitment to best practice ecological sustainability, natural area management and the provision of quality ecotourism experiences.

What are Nature Tourism and Ecotourism?

Under the Eco Certification Program, Nature Tourism is defined as: Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas. Under the Eco Certification Program, Ecotourism is defined as: Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation.

Look for the Eco Certified Logo

From Kakadu to Cairns and from Ningaloo to New South Wales, many ECO Certified operators have joined our online community as Australian Travel Experts. Look for the Eco Certified logo on our Australian Trips and Tours, Inspiring Activities and Great Places to Stay to find a genuine ecotourism experience that has been audited under Ecotourism Australia’s world-leading ECO Certification program.

Our Commitment to Saving Energy

In 1992, the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro highlighted, for the first time, the real threat of climate change on a global scale. The following year, the UK Government established The Energy Saving Trust and set a target for reducing UK emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change, by 20 per cent of 1990 levels by 2010. The Energy Saving Trust is a non-profit organisation, funded both by government and the private sector. Almost half of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions come from energy we use every day - at home and when we travel. By saving energy we can all help prevent climate change.

Making a personal commitment to saving 20% of the energy we use

In response to the threat of climate change and to help preserve the places that matter most to us, each of us at addicedtotravel.com has made a personal commitment to save 20% of the energy we use.

Our offices and other responsible initiatives

Each of our team makes an effort to recycle as much plastic, cans, paper, bottles, cardboard, printer cartridges and batteries as possible. We use scrap paper for making written notes and as a virtual business strive for a paperless working environment. We print no brochures and discourage the receipt and sending of printed mail. We purchase fair trade products as a matter of course.

We ensure computers and monitors are turned off after work and prefer to wear cosy fleeces rather than turn-up the heating. Each of our team is home-based so has no need to commute by car, bus or train. Where possible we choose to walk or cycle rather than use motorized transport. If we do have to drive we always make an effort to car-share where appropriate.
