Local Traditions

Nepal is a traditional Asian society with a predominantly Hindu and Buddhist population of countless ethnic groups. The Nepalis are overwhelmingly friendly to visitors and with a few pointers you will avoid causing offence.

Namaste is the common greeting, the equivalent of ‘hello’ and translates as ‘I salute the spirit within you’. Public displays of affection should be avoided and you should always remove shoes when entering homes or a temple precinct (along remove also any items of leather, such as belts, when visiting temples). As the feet are the lowest part of the body try to ensure that you do not point them towards people and also avoid stepping over people.

With the head being the highest part of the body and much respected do not touch people on the head, for example the friendly ruffling of kids’ hair.

The hearth is sacred in Nepali homes, so it is improper to dispose of rubbish by burning it. If invited into a home or indeed anywhere avoid giving or receiving things with the ‘unclean’ left hand.

The wearing of shorts is acceptable by men only, and only then whilst trekking; women should wear a comfortable long skirt or the now-ubiquitous multi-pocketed trekking trousers.
