Local Traditions
Italy is a modern Western country with strong attachments to family values and the church, especially in rural areas. The family unit tends to be closer than in the UK and respect for the church greater.
Visitors to churches should ensure they are dressed respectfully, with shoulders and legs covered. Not all places allow photos, museums in particular have rules about this. Flash photography is frowned upon as being disruptive. Many museums are closed one day a week, often on Monday.
It is not considered appropriate to walk around town in bikinis, beach attire or very short shorts. Sunbathing topless is common on beaches in northern and central Italy, however be prepared for stares and whistles in the more conservative and traditional south.
Whilst serious crime is rare, however pickpockets and purse-snatchers are common in large cities: take care on public transport and in crowded areas where pickpockets and bag snatchers may be operating. In Rome, take particular care around the main railway station, Termini, on the number 64 bus, which goes to and from St Peter's Square, and when unloading your baggage from airport/city coaches.
Cutting your spaghetti into small pieces is considered tacky – roll it against the plate or bowl with your fork; use a spoon if necessary…
