The US Dollar is the hard currency of preference. The local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF).

Money Exchange

Only commercial banks can cash traveller's cheques.

ATM Availability

ATM machines are not widely available in Rwanda and should not be relied on.

Credit Cards

These are only accepted in some large hotels always check first

Only commercial banks in Kigali cash traveller's cheques

Other Information

The Rwandan Franc comes in the following denominations: 5,000, 1,000, 500 and 100 notes. 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 coins. The majority of transactions in Rwanda are handled in cash.
