Getting Around Oman
Buses
Exploring Oman by bus is only really a possibility if intending to visit the main towns. Small, shared minivans, often called baiza busses, act as shared taxis on smaller pre-set, localised routes.
Taxis
Taxis are the way to get around Muscat, being clean, comfortable and easily found. As elsewhere in the region fares need to be agreed before setting off.
Car Hire
This is the most popular way of getting around Oman and given that most peoples itineraries will involve a degree of travelling away from the Muscat coastal area there’s no doubt that you’ll ride in either your own self-drive hire car / 4WD or hire one with a driver. Having your own transport allows a huge degree of independence and will enable you to see much more in a shorter time. Cars can be hired at Muscat’s Seep Airport, through almost any hotel or via their office or a local travel expert. Hire is available to those over 21, and you’ll need your passport, driving licence and a credit card for the deposit. Hire usually includes all insurances – but check. Don’t be tempted to hire without insurance. If you intend to drive outside of Oman and that includes driving up to Musandam you will need authorisation from your hire company; ensure insurance is still valid.
Driving
Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.
Boats
Sightseeing by traditional boat, the dhow, is possible from Muscat’s Muttrah Harbour as is a weeks’ sailing around the fjords of the Musandam Peninsula. Both are recommended in their own way; arrange through a local travel expert.
